Crossposting Bonanza 2008

I spend a fair bit of time on social networking sites these days, something that surprises Jason Of The Past a pretty good bit. They're a great way to keep up with all the people I know scattered across the world, and they have some other nice features too. One feature I don't tend to use on these sites, though, is the blogging feature. I've hosted my own blog for a long time and prefer to keep all my blogging in one place. Still, I'd like to close all the audience gaps I can.

It looks like I might be a little closer to that goal now. Last night I found a Wordpress plugin that lets me automatically crosspost to Myspace. It's inelegant to say the least, but that's more the fault of Myspace than the author of the crossposter, and anyway it gets the job done. And today I found Wordbook, a Wordpress plugin that crossposts to Facebook for me. It interfaces beautifully with both Facebook and my Wordpress installation. I've found my reaction to the difference in compatibility and elegance of the plugins, and how those reactions influence my feelings about the two sites, very interesting.

Since joining up on both sites last year (late adopter, for once) I've wavered back and forth over which is more enjoyable to use and which is more useful for me. Early on I preferred Facebook, for its clean look and relative ease of use. Then the overwhelming crush of app requests came along, and I started to be bothered by how slowly it always seemed to load on my computer. For quite a while I all but abandoned using Facebook.

At that point I began using Myspace more often, even though it had always felt kind of clunky and awkward and "teeny" to me. For one thing, it was fast. Most of the same people I knew on Facebook were also present on Myspace. I was also beginning to do some promotional work for my friends' band, a purpose for which I feel Myspace has much more utility. These pros led me to ignore or just deal with most of the cons: the repeated Windows-style "are you sure you want to do this?" requests, the ugly design, the spam.

What I find really interesting is that the ease of use in the Wordbook plugin has the same root system as all those stupid app requests I got all the time: the Facebook API. The very thing that makes the site so easy to use and access through Wordpress - and therefore more likely to use Facebook - is the same reason I got tired of using Facebook in the first place. Oh, the irony. I actually went through and deleted a bunch of apps there yesterday; maybe I'll start using it more often.

At any rate, all of my friends on both sites should now be able to read musings like this as soon as I post them. Whether they'll want to read them is a different matter altogether. :-)
